See how the Mesomorph Somatotype sizes up
MAIN CHARACTERISTICS Appearance Mesomorphs usually have athletic builds and show pronounced musculature and leanness. Although they do not necessarily have large bones, they normally have narrow waists and broad shoulders. They tend to have a fairly fast metabolism and carry minimal body fat. This Somatotype is without doubt the envy of most, since it holds most of the advantages. Meanwhile, individuals of the Ectomorphic and Endomorphic body types must be content with the few advantages they each have. "Mesos" have it the easiest in terms of body shaping and muscle-building potential, and they will have the easiest time shaping up and losing any unwanted body fat. In short, they will not find it difficult to be in great condition. Advantages As with the Ectomorphic body type, the Meso also has the advantage of not really having to worry too much about watching the calories. Still, going overboard too much will show, but they still have it easier than the other two Somatotypes to add muscle and get or stay in good shape. Mesomorphy means superior anaerobic potential and individuals of this body type are excellent candidates for strength and power sports. Metabolism Mesos share the fast metabolism with Ectos but in addition carry a higher quantity of lean mass, which means they can get that “ripped” muscular look with little effort and maintain a desired weight without much fuss. Disadvantages None, really. EXERCISE AND NUTRITION CONSIDERATIONS FOR SHAPING UP Muscle building potential These gifted individuals have significant muscle-building potential. They usually possess longer muscles with wider muscle bellies. In addition, with the higher percentage of fast-twitch muscle fibers they possess, strength and/or weight-gaining workout programs are well-suited to them. They can therefore build muscle naturally and with ease by following a moderate program (or a more intense level regimen if desired). Weight workouts The Mesomorphic body type has the capacity to train longer and harder than the other two body types. Since Mesos can add lean mass with relative ease, the main focus for them is to monitor their progress and taper off their weight workouts once the desired body composition and results are achieved. They can then look to maintaining the condition by monitoring their measurements and taking small corrective action where necessary. Cardiovascular exercise Mesos tolerate both resistance and cardio training rather well. Since they are not considered hard-gainers like Ectomorphs, they usually derive more benefit from cardiovascular exercise, and can therefore adjust their aerobic workouts as necessary. However, given that Mesos also have fairly quick metabolisms, they need not overdo it with aerobic activity for fat-burning. Eating plan Similar to the Ectomorph, the Mesomorph has a constitution which easily handles a higher calorie diet. However, Ectos may just have the edge when it comes to this characteristic. Notheless, Mesos do not have Although Mesos have more leeway in the eating department, they should still stick with a regular meal frequency to maintain their condition, and for optimal health. Recovery As this body type tolerates high volumes of exercise fairly well, their is no significant consideration needed from the Meso's point-of-view, except to adopt a sensible approach and not to overdo it because he/she can. There is still a requirement for proper rest and recovery to make good on the physical efforts so as to stimulate required gains. Notable examples In terms of well-known Sportsfigures displaying Mesomorphic tendencies, former pro bodybuilder Tom Platz, who boasted incredible muscle development especially in his legs, is considered an excellent example of this body type. Famous celebrities with characteristics of this body type include Madonna and Mark Wahlberg.
